More FC31 woes : X won't start

sean darcy
I've upgrade another machine to FC31, and have another problem. X won't start.

Here's Xorg.0.log. Nothing obvious to me.

Any help appreciated.

sean

The xfce window manager , xfwm4 , is installed.

Do you get any more info if you do

systemctl start lightdm

Or, is there any more info in the journal about lightdm?

You could try telling lightdm to start a dumb failsafe
session where it just starts xterm and nothing else.
If that works then X is working and the problem is
with xfce.

SOLVED:

/etc/sysconfig/desktop was empty.

Added:

PREFERRED=/usr/bin/startxfce4
DISPLAYMANAGER=/usr/sbin/lightdm

and X worked.

Another FC31 adventure. Sigh.

Or maybe the problem is that it existed. I have no such
file on my system and X is working fine.

Well, I have a pure Xfce VM and it starts fine with a non-existent desktop or empty desktop file.
I wonder if it would be different if I added a second desktop.  But, I'm not that itching to try it.  :-)

In either case, for a new clean install it's a mess.

I think the point is that you've fixed a problem by editing an empty file.  Yet an empty file or
a missing file doesn't cause a problem in all cases.

A mystery that may (will?) remain unsolved.  :-)

Mine is a normal Xfce install.  So, I don't start from the command line.  lightdm is the default
display manager.

That's why there's no problem. I've removed rhgb from the kernel command
line, so I start at the terminal. Then startx fails.

????

Removing rhgb (Red Hat Graphical Boot) simply allows the boot messages to be shown
as opposed to hiding them.  X is still started normally.

When talking about starting X from the terminal I was under the impression you changed
the default.target from point to /lib/systemd/system/graphical.target to pointing to
/lib/systemd/system/multi-user.target

This would result in booting to a text based login.  From there on would login and manually
start X by issuing startxfce4 for example

FWIW, I just booted my F31Xfce VM with no "desktop" file and without rhgb on the kernel
line and it booted just fine to the Graphical Login of lightdm.
